These are animals killed for food, counted as individuals. Terrestrial and avian figures — mammals and birds — are FAOSTAT head counts; aquatic animals, by number the largest group of all, killed in the hundreds of billions to trillions, can now be counted with the control above, where the figures are fishcount.org.uk estimates rather than head counts. Not shown anywhere here: animals who die before slaughter, the day-old male chicks culled at hatcheries, or animals killed outside recorded food production. The true toll is higher than what is shown here.

The pace assumes the year's killing is spread evenly across it; the live figures are a steady rate, not a live feed. The FAO "China" aggregate is excluded so its regions are not counted twice.
